Introduction Paragraph

  • An introduction paragraph must give some background on the topic and lead into the thesis statement. the background information can be general.
  • An introduction paragraph should not tell why your thesis is right. It should describe the situation and then state the thesis. There should be at least three sentences and up to about six or so.
  • The thesis statement must be a statement, not a question. The thesis statement must be a statement - a sentence, not a topic.

When scientists announced the first successful cloning of a mammal, the world was amazed. Cloning is the process by which a complete organism is created through one cell instead of having to fertilize a cell. It had been long known that each cell of an organism contained DNA and that the DNA contained the genetic information for the entire being. Plants had been reproduced with one cell. However, scientists had thought that reproducing a mammal with one cell was impossible. This first mammalian clone, Dolly, not only left the world shocked. It left the world with the ethical dilemma on whether experiments in human cloning should be allowed. Human cloning should not be allowed.

See how I can use the same background information to introduce taking the opposite position for the thesis.
